Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital in the world. The city has a population of about 131,000 people, making it the largest city in the country. The number of inhabitants has increased significantly in recent years, also due to the growing tourism industry. The official language is Icelandic, but most residents also speak English.
The city is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, with many galleries, museums and venues. There are a number of festivals that take place throughout the year such as the Iceland Airwaves international music festival, the Reykjavik International Film Festival and the Reykjavik Winter Lights Festival.
Reykjavik is also known for its famous geothermal scene, with many geothermal spas such as the Blue Lagoon and Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths. The city is also a starting point for tours of some of Iceland’s spectacular natural attractions, such as the Golden Circle, Thingvellir National Park and Jökulsárlón glacial lake.
In terms of demographics, Reykjavik is the most densely populated city in Iceland. The city has a very young population, with an average age of only around 36 years. The city is also very progressive when it comes to gender equality and is known for being one of the first cities to hold an official gay pride march.
